MARANA
Over the past few years Marana has been
listed as one of the five fastest-growing communities in Arizona! It has a
population of just over 80,000 people.
Located in Pima County, Marana is just 17
miles north of Tucson and about 90 miles south of Phoenix. It has about 70
square miles within its boundaries.
Marana is just off of Interstate 10, which
makes it a great location for interstate commerce. The Marana Regional Airport
serves this area.
Marana was incorporated in 1977. It is the
cultural and economic center for a rural area within a 500-mile
radius.
Major attractions: three professional golf
courses, the Marana Senior Center, terrific parks and recreational
opportunities, the Marana Arts Council.
TUCSON
In about 1540, the Coronado Expedition
reached Arizona in search of the "Seven Cities of Gold." This was about the
time the "white man" started settling in the Arizona Territory. In 1775, Hugo
O'Connor founded the Tucson Presido. This became the birth date of the city of
Tucson. Arizona became an official territory of the United States in 1863, and
Tucson was the territorial capitol between 1867 and 1889.
Tucson lies in the southeastern section of
Arizona about 85 miles from the Mexican border on U.S. Interstate 19, which
runs north and south, and Interstate 10, which runs east and west. Tucson
covers 226.131 square miles.
As of April 1, 2000, according to the year
2000 census, the population of Tucson was 486,699. The median age of the
population in the year 2000 was 35.7.
Some of the major attractions: highly rated
spas and resorts, great golf courses, Tuscon International Airport, the Tucson
Children's Museum, the Fort Lowell Museum, Colossal Cave Mountain
Park.
ORO VALLEY
Oro Valley is in northeastern Pima County,
six miles north of the Tucson city limits. The Santa Cruz River joining Gold
Creek in the Catalina Mountains formed the valley. It sits at an elevation of
2,620 feet, covers over 31 square miles and has a current population of nearly
30,000. Oro Valley was incorporated in April 1974.
Oro Valley offers a wide range of community
and cultural facilities including James D. Kriegh Park with an olympic-sized
swimming pool, racquetball courts and Little League fields and the newly opened
CDO Riverfront Park. Canyon Del Oro High School has baseball fields, tennis
courts, and a running track.
Oro Valley has two country clubs, one
private and one public, and a total of four 18-hole golf courses and one
nine-hole. Tennis and swimming as well as other recreation activities are
available at the country clubs.
Airports: The residents of Oro Valley have
access to Tucson International Airport. Additionally, residents can access the
La Cholla Airpark, a private facility west of Oro Valley.
Major attractions: The Greater Oro Valley
Arts Council, many beautiful parks and recreation facilities, a large library,
beautiful bike paths, walking and hiking clubs.
